January 17, rebels attacked the town of Menaka in the outer eastern Mali. The fighting quickly spread to all the deserts of northeastern Mali, causing the most serious crisis since independence in 1960. Tens of thousands of Tuaregs, Songhai, Fulani and Arabs fled the fighting to the relative safety of neighboring countries such as Niger, Algeria, Mauritania and Burkina Faso. Desert Songs For Refugees is a charity album that aims to raise funds for refugees from rural communities and Aguel'hoc Tessalit in the north-western Mali. Both villages have seen the fiercest fighting of the conflict. Desert Songs For Refugees has a fantastic mix of music from the desert, including rare and unpublished pieces of the most famous Tuareg groups, whether in Mali (Tinariwen, Tamikrest, Terakaft, Tartit ...), Niger (Bombino, Toumast , Etran Finatawa) or Algeria (Baly Nabil Othman, Faris). Music in the image of what the Malian desert can be intense, joyful, beautiful, proud, poetic and quiet. It is dedicated to all those working to do so again. All profits from sales of this CD will go to two NGOs working with refugees in northern Mali: TAMOUDRÉ and ETAR. All those involved in producing this album for free make their contribution.
