Saxophonist Dave Liebman, who was with Miles Davis during a few discs cults (On The Corner, Get Up With It, Dark Magus), has never hidden his passion for John Coltrane. Like the latter, it is expressed on the same instruments, that is to say, the tenor and soprano which he is a specialist with Steve Lacy. In 1985, Liebman made ​​a first tribute to Trane on Naima, recorded with pianist Richard Beirach. Two years later, the twentieth anniversary of the death of his idol, he did it again twice, first on Homage To John Coltrane recorded in New York on behalf of the French label Owl, then Tribute To John Coltrane with Wayne Shorter, Richard Beirach, Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette. If there is illustrated mainly Liebman on soprano, the singularity of this disc is, however, in its original construction divided into two parts of four songs each. The first is a tribute totally acoustic (with Jim McNeely, Eddie Gomez, Adam Nussbaum, Caris Visentin), while the second, surprisingly, is electric (Bob Moses, Caris Visentin, Jim Beard on keyboards, Mark Egan on electric bass) . In one case as in the other, the lyricism is at its height, and makes a lively and sincere tribute to the one Dave Liebman continues to claim.
