Benjamin Duboc is a leading figure of free improvisation in France since the early 2000s. He has appeared over the years with visiting musicians such as Henry Grimes, Mario Rechtern, Eric Zinman, Roy Campbell, Byard Lancaster, Joe McPhee and the best of the local scene: Jean-Luc Guionnet, Didier Lasserre, Edward Perraud, Daunik Lazro. His double-bass playing is best described as both cerebral and deeply lyrical, very akin to the improvising styles of Grimes, Barre Philipps, Joëlle Léandre and Kent Carter.

Trumpet player Itaru Oki introduced Japan jazz to Free music in the late 1960s along with legendary figures such as Masahiko Togashi, Masayuki Takayanagi, Kaoru Abe and Masahiko Satoh. Forty years on, he is still a rebel in sound, as evidenced in “Nobusiko”: idiosyncratic, fragmentary, richly layered, hooked on melody while disregarding tone in favour of color. Benjamin Duboc’s double bass provides a continuous chant, strongly melodic, bordering on classicism, thus making this album a fascinating study in contrast.
