This recording was the result of an almost unique merging of major talents. Helen Merrill has long been one of the most important jazz singers - not necessarily among the most widely famous, but at her best fully comparable to any of the names at the top of the list. She is clearly at her best here. Her collaborator, Dick Katz, has a rare opportunity to demonstrate his varied skills, and with them is a team of musicians that makes the old master-of-ceremonies cliche come true: none of them needs an introduction.
