McCoy has been writing off and on for several years, but when Bob Thiele of Impulse asked him to make his first album after listening to him for many nights with Coltrane, McCoy was spurred to renewed concentration on composition. The four originals in this album are the result. 'I try not to overwrite' says McCoy. 'I want to write things that fall naturally so that the other musicians aren't inhibited and they can feel and shape my tunes their own way'.
