When the enemies of liberation - political, artistic, and personal - were monolithic, an unprecedented talent arrived to combat them all. Cabaret singer, actor, and librettist as well as lyricist - Mahalia Jackson and Abbey Lincoln had recorded his tunes before he did - Oscar Brown, Jr. broke with the jazz crooners and blue shouters, sidestepped vocalese, and presaged Gil Scott-Heron, the Last Poets, and rap. His words meant as much as any protest singer's - only they were accompanied by a jazzman's tempo, rhyme, and humor.
