Jon Eardley & Hod O'brien

"Yardbird suite"

1990 (réf. BJJR 024).
titrealter

Recorded live at the Sju-huis in Utrecht, Holland on May 11th 1990.

A rare meeting of two great American talents overseas the wonderful pianist Hod O'Brien, and trumpet modernist Jon Eardley! The pairing's a great one as Hod's warmly soulful approach to the keys is offset by some of Eardley's sharper horn lines as the players stretch out over some very long live tunes on the set. All numbers are standards, and the group also features Hans Mantel on bass and Bram Wijland on drums both players who seem to sit aside and let O'Brien and Eardley take over whenever they want which is ok by us! One number features only the piano trio and titles include Crazy Rhythm, Will You Still Be Mine, Blue N Boogie, Out Of Nowhere, Yardbird Suite, and What's New.

Featuring :
Jon Eardley (trumpet), Hod O'brien (piano), Hans Mantel, Bram Wijland (drums)

Slide Hampton

"Callitwhatchawana"

2002 (réf. BJJR 018).
titrealter

Recorded live on December 19th, 2002 at Jazzclub Pannonica in The Hague, Holland.

Slide Hampton's not on every track here, but his presence really makes the album sparkle blowing with his usual strong, soulful vibe in the company of two younger tenor players! The album's a live one, recorded in Holland with a Dutch quintet that features the great Cees Slinger on piano, and both Sjoerd Dijkhuizen and Simon Rigter on tenors blowing in tight formation on all numbers, but sounding their best when Hampton joins the group on 6 of the album's 9 tracks! As with so many Hampton dates overseas, there seems to be a little something extra in the rhythms a bounce, or a balance between force and lyricism, that really pushes his tunes in a fresh sort of way skippingly soulful, just as we first came to love in Slide's music so many decades ago. Titles include Lament, Griffin, Invitation, Sandra, The Loner, Callitwhachawana, and The Eternal Triangle.

Featuring :
Slide Hampton (trombon), Sjoerd Dijkhuizen (saxophone), Simon Rigter (saxophone), Eric Ineke (drums), Cees Slinger (piano), Frans Van Geest (bass)
