Pat Mallinger

"Moorean moon"

2000 (réf. BJJR 030).
titrealter

Recorded Live during the 25th North Sea Jazz Festival in the Hague, Holland at the Mariszaal of Het Nederlands Congres Centrum on July 14, 2000.

Pat Mallinger's a fellow Chicagoan of ours, but he really hits his height on this overseas recording a live date that's filled with lots of sharp-edged work on the alto and tenor sax! Mallinger's got a slightly exotic vibe at times never so much as Yusef Lateef, but maybe like Frank Strozier or Jimmy Heath a slight hint of deeper ideas that really makes his music sparkle and takes it far past standard saxwork by Americans overseas. The setting's a quartet, with frequent Mallinger partner Pat Ryan on piano as well as Thomas Kini on bass and Jeff Stitely on drums and there's some great long tracks on the record that really open up with a wonderfully fresh sound. Mallinger contributed the originals Moorean Moon and Queen Anne's Lace and other titles include Voyage, China Doll, The Thumper/Nursery Blues, and Monster & The Flower.

Featuring :
Pat Mallinger (saxophone), Thomas Kini (bass), Jim Ryan (piano), Jeff Stitely (drums)

John Marshall & Ferdinand Povel

"Marshall arts"

2006 (réf. BJJR 047).
titrealter

A powerful set from this pair of European hornmen the great Ferdinand Povel on tenor sax, and American ex-pat John Marshall on trumpet and flugelhorn! We've always loved Povel's work for its slightly exotic qualities, and in the company of Marshall's trumpet, there's a feel here that's almost like some of Dusko Goykovich's sides in recent decades a hint of the richer veins of European jazz from the 60s and 70s, but played with a sense of understatement too one that has the horns balanced beautifully alongside the rhythms stretching out with surprising moments of feeling, then sliding back into some tighter group formations. Other players include Rob Van Bavel on piano, John Goldsby on bass, and Mark Taylor on drums and titles include Capers, the Eternal Triangle, Benny's Pennies, So Sorry Please, Marshall Arts, and Another 17 a number of which are originals by Van Bavel.

Featuring :
John Marshall (trumpet), Ferdinand Povel (saxophone), John Goldsby (bass), Mark Taylor (drums), Rob Van Bavel (piano)

Red Rodney & Herman Schoonderwalt

"Scrapple from the apple"

1975 (réf. BJJR 017).
titrealter

Recorded live at Nick Vollebergt's Jazz Café in Laren, Holland on January 12th, 1975.

A rare date from bop legend Red Rodney a sweet 70s set that has the player working overseas with a Dutch quintet! Red shares leadership of the group with saxophonist Herman Schoonderwalt who plays both alto and clarinet on the record and the record's a live date, done for radio with very good sound quality. All tracks are quite long, with a nicely building quality often strong trumpet lines in the lead from Red, followed by surprisingly great reedwork from Herman. Nico Bunink is the pianist in the group and titles include Schooldays, Jurdu, Lover Man, On Green Dolphin Street, and I Can't Get Started.
